Motivate and justify the Business Process Redesign (BPR):

  • Make sure you understand that a process redesign effort (aka process reengineering) is different from a continuous improvement that is low-risk (involves costs over longer periods of time);
  • Analyze your current way in which business things are done and evaluate whether it is possible to recast it in a way to reach frequentative increase of productivity or efficiency;
  • Evaluate if you are ready to revise how these things are done so far to develop and implement a breakthrough innovation, starting from “a clean slate”;
  • Investigate whether it really makes sense to radically restructure the subjected process instead of improving it incrementally (ensure the current way of this process is fundamentally obsolete);
  • Consider whether it is possible for organization to invest time and money into a long and costly cross-functional effort that will create deep structural changes in your process;

Prepare for the BPR effort:

  • Inspect the subjected process to figure out what critical performance measures can be improved, and which of them (such as cost, quality, service, and speed) are critical for your redesign;
  • Review the current organization of the subjected process and identify all points and areas where inefficiencies are hampering process development to a higher level of performance;
  • Accurately analyze the current assets of the process to find out the most obsolete and ineffective components which are rigid and hence “organic parts” of the outdated process design;  
  • Start rethinking the process design from reviewing the underlying business mission and identify whether it needs to be redefined as well;
  • Make sure your business mission is aligned with strategic and operational goals of the process – once you are sure you don’t operate upon questionable assumptions, start redesigning how these goals can be achieved;

Plan and develop the BPR project:

  • Involve the immediate process performers to input into the redesign conception, and establish their participation in acceptance and ownership of the reformed process;
  • Develop a vision of the reformed process, and check whether its conception has rather a positive impact upon the morale of employees (consider and plan social change);
  • Set realistic scope and expectations upon your redesign effort (objectively define what dramatic improvements you are seeking in a result of redesign) and develop a strategy to reach them;
  • Assemble a cross-functional team for the process redesign and transformation – this will help in integrating and improving the enterprise by collaborative project to produce a robust solution;
  • Launch problem solving projects to engineer appropriate technological solutions for the process “to-be design” – revise process schema and develop innovations to improve operational results;
