Select Employee Appraisal Methods:

  • Identify a set of success criteria that make workers suitable for certain positions or workplaces. This can be a listing of skills that are associated with their typical responsibilities, duties and daily tasks;
  • Compose checklists of success criteria which an employee must meet to be successful at his workplace. Management needs to define which of conditions on the checklist an employee has achieved in a result of his service, and hence mark appropriate items as “yes” or “no”. With a help of this type of appraisal you can highlight the performance areas where the employees must concentrate their efforts to reach the highest possible levels of success;
  • Extend your checklists with additional qualitative options to rank every item on these lists with a degree to which employee performs them. This may help to determine how well each staff member copes with every specific category of performance (this is called “Ranking”). You can appraise every performance area in terms such as “good”, “excellent”, “sufficient”, “poor”, etc. This method gives you a profound vision of an employee’s readiness for further development and promotion;
  • Ask the immediate manager to compose an essay which illustrates the employee’s talents, skills, behaviors, accomplishments, and targets for performance improvement. This type of appraisal is not fully objective, as it is based upon private opinion of the supervisor, so if his ability to assess employees adequately is doubtful (for example a risk to overrate a favored employee), then this method should be avoided;
  • Manage the staff members by objectives – this appraisal method includes evaluating workers by planning certain goals for them to be achieved during an appraisal period. Performance of a worker is judged from how well he reaches these objectives, without tracking back to methods and behaviors which were used; 
  • Peer and customer reviews – this can be a part of 360-degree appraisal which is based on getting complex feedback from co-workers and clients. Combination of different opinions from various sources may give a deep and rich insight of an employee’s real performance;

Select Employee Appraisal Sources:

  • The job description and performance standards: documentation of the core duties and tasks of the role, job, or workplace (they are used to judge basic employee suitability level);
  • Results of the last appraisal and improvement plans: objectives defined in a result of the last appraisal sessions are used as an objective employee improvement gauge, so they are qualified as achieved or missed during the next appraisal;
  • Work rules, policies and procedures: worker appraisal includes consideration of how well and precisely he observes and follows corporate requirements and restrictions;
