How to select and reward Employee of the Month:

  • Publicize selection criteria that you will use to choose Employee of the Month – these requirements can be fixed or modifiable, but should be always definitely articulated and clearly announced;
  • Keep your selection process completely clear and transparent, so every person selected to be Employee of the Month can know for sure why he was chosen, while other employees can stay still motivated to try harder next time;
  • Make sure selection criteria are measurable, so they can be easily understood by the staff members. Employees need something objectively to be strived for – comprehensive targets will stimulate your workers to struggle for award, while vague definitions of success will only demotivate them;
  • Outline personal ideals that the Employee of the Month should possess (these personal and professional qualities should make up as a paragon which stands for fair and healthy competition among employees);
  • Create robust working conditions where your employees will be interested to concentrate at improving their own  performance rates up to the best established standards, but not at spying on each other to discover fails of their fellows;
  • If a number of employees accomplish the stated criteria at the end of the month, then you should not indicate only one winner among them (until this person has achieved something really great). Better share the award between employees fairly and recognize everyone as the Employee of the Month;
  • If you did select someone specific though, then publicly explain why you think that this person deserves this award (make sure nobody is offended and grounds for rumors are minimized);
  • Prepare “Employee of the Month” recognition to be pleasant and considerable, but not too precious yet: for example it could be a corporate gift or souvenir, gift certificate, or official “thank you” note;
  • Make sure this gift is always known at the beginning of the month, before the official competition for “Employee of the Month” title begins;
  • Remember that people like recognitions with a randomness element that makes a surprise (but ensure that reward is adequate to current Employee of the Month requirements);
  • Ensure that all employees participating in the competition are eligible for it – they all should be equally trained and properly qualified;
