PRINCE2 PM Methodology – Succeeding in Delivering Product-Based Projects

PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments, 2-nd version) is an internationally used project management (PM) methodology based on a process-driven approach to preparing, starting, implementing and closing various projects. Initially it was designed for managing IT-related projects; however, it was further improved so today actually any project can be planned and executed under this efficient PM methodology. PRINCE2 offers a unique management method that consists of three parts such as: Processes, Components and Techniques. The method and its parts allow considering a project as a sequence of certain phases that are performed to produce a product according to its business case. The PRINCE2 methodology makes it possible to check the product against requirements listed in the business case throughout the project lifecycle, so the project becomes product-based and is driven by the business case. The PRINCE2 method is implemented under 8 high-level processes, including: Directing a Project (DP) Planning a Project (PP) Starting up a Project (SP) Initiating a Project (IP) Controlling a Stage (CS) Managing Product Delivery (PD) Managing a Stage Boundary (SB) Closing a Project (CP) The first process (DP) is the longest one and carried out throughout the entire lifecycle of the project. Other processes are performed step by step or in parallel during certain phases. All the processes create a PRINCE2 phase model (view the Figure 1) that includes four components, such as: Preparation (Pre-Project) Initiation Implementation Closure Model of PRINCE2 Processes and Phases The four phases can be applied to implementing your project and delivering its product by using the PRINCE2 method.
